What to expect at Glennon Heights….
What should you expect when you show up to worship at Glennon Heights Mennonite Church? As you enter the building a few minutes before the worship service begins at 9:30 on a Sunday morning you’ll find people in conversation. Some are dressed very casually, others more formally. Folks come as they are comfortable.
Someone will greet you and help you find your way to the sanctuary. They’ll give you a worship bulletin. You’ll easily find a place to sit; the pews aren’t full. People will settle in around you, while up front the pianist, or an instrumental group, or a solo performer begins to play. The prelude has begun.
The worship service generally moves through an established pattern: Call to Worship, Gathering Songs, Children’s Time, Scripture reading, Sermon, Song, Offering, Announcements, Pastoral Prayer, Song, Benediction. However, sometimes that pattern varies or new elements are added. Though there is a pattern, and the atmosphere is worshipful, the overall feeling is informal. Many folks from the congregation – including the children – are involved in the worship services.
We love to sing. We use the Voices Together hymnal. Sometimes we sing with accompaniment (piano, guitar, drums). Sometimes we sing a cappella. Our music is more traditional than contemporary, though we are always adding new favorites to our “traditional” store. We enjoy learning and singing music from different countries and ethnic heritages.
After the worship service ends, folks generally stand up where they are and informally greet the people around them. If you are a visitor, folks will greet you and find out who you are. Eventually everyone finds their way downstairs to the Fellowship Hall where coffee, tea and goodies await.
Conversations continue until our Adult Sunday School class convenes. (There is a class for youth and a class for grade-school-age children as well.) Folks continue to sip their coffee and nibble their goodies as the Sunday School presentation begins. Often some good discussion follows. This is a good way to get know who folks are and what they think.
We believe that loving God and following Jesus means being in community with others. We would love to have you join us!
